June 8th, Maniac Dam Race Across Dworshak Dam!

Join Us June 8th, 2013 For "The Best Dam Race In Idaho"

“Dam Open, Runners Welcome!” Orofino Chamber Of Commerce Maniac Dam Race Chair Tanna Zywina is referring to the June 8th Maniac Dam Race, which will shuttle at least a hundred runners over the top of the Dworshak Dam in Orofino, Idaho.  This exciting event boasts a non-traditional run/walk designed to appeal to every age.  This just might be one of the best ways to enjoy Dworshak Dam, which is the highest straight-axis concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere.

While the fishermen trying to get to the boat docks at Bruce’s Eddy might be a bit frustrated, it’s all for a good cause – a couple of them, actually.  The Maniac Dam race is poised to become a popular 3K or 5K run walk, and not just for its unique course with access to the top of the Dworshak Dam, Clearwater River views and long open flat course.

It’s also because the organization that benefits from it is one that works directly towards improving the Orofino community and its businesses.  The Orofino Chamber of Commerce is excited to be able to organize and run this healthy community event.  Not to mention, the town’s hotels and restaurants, especially those with plenty of carbohydrates on the menu, will do a brisk business.

“Overall, the race/walk will be good for Orofino’s economy while providing citizens with unique access to the Dam. It's a chance to show off Orofino’s hospitality. We want to keep this race going and coming back year after year, it’s only going to get bigger!” says Zywina.

The race offers runners and walkers two unique choices, you can choose either a 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk or a 3K (1.86 miles) run/walk experience.  Participants will check-in at the Dworshak Dam Visitors Center starting at 8 am.  Racers will then proceed to the Dworshak View Point where the race will begin at 10 am.  Participants will follow along the outlined 3K or 5K course across the Dworshak Dam to the midpoint check-in station and then return along the course to the finish line back at the Dworshak Dam Visitors Center where food, drinks and other activities will take place.

The race is open to all ages of people, the cost to pre-register is free for children under age 5, $20 for adults, and $15 for Youth (ages 6 to 10).  Participants can also register the day of the event, but the fee will increase $10 for race day registration.  Participants 18 years of age or younger must have an adult present to sign a waiver the day of the event, and all participants must present a valid photo id the day of the race for security purposes.  All registration proceeds from this unique event will go back into the Orofino Community through the operations of the Orofino Chamber of Commerce.
